Eight suspects have been charged in connection with the disturbance and assaults on staff Sunday at a state juvenile facility in Frederick County, Maryland State Police investigators say.
Three of the suspects were charged as adults after troopers consulted with the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office.
One suspect, identified as Diego Glay, 19, was charged with first-degree escape, second-degree assault, riot, malicious destruction of property under $1,000 and theft under $100, police said.
The other two charged as adults were identified as Daniel Ennos, 17, and Bernard Moore, 17. Both are charged with first-degree and second-degree assault, first-degree escape, riot, malicious destruction of property under $1,000, and theft under $100, police said.
Another five suspects were charged as juveniles with riot, second-degree assault, first-degree escape, malicious destruction of property under $1,000 and theft under $100, police said.
All individuals charged remain in the custody of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services.
MSP troopers and Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called at 11:30 a.m. Sunday for a disturbance at the Victor Cullen Center in the 6000 block of Cullen Drive in Sabillasville.
Police established a perimeter around the center and called for more assistance from the MSP Mobile Field Force, the STATE Team and Criminal Enforcement Division.
Using a staff radio, a deputy trained as a negotiator communicated with the juveniles and ultimately, eight juveniles were arrested without further incident.
Investigators said the incident started Sunday morning when two juveniles got into a fight and that led to other juveniles engaging in physical altercations with staff members.
Juveniles got the keys and radios from staff members during the assaults, and although juveniles were able to escape where they were housed and had access the facility grounds, none escaped from the Victor Cullen Center, police said.
During the incident, juveniles assaulted eight staff members -- three of whom were taken to hospitals for treatment, police said.
Juveniles also kicked out a window, kicked in an office trailer door, and broke a trailer window and stole candy from the trailer they broke into, police said.
Investigators believe further charges may be filed. The investigation is ongoing.
